BOBCAT REQUIREMENTS MET

November 28, 2011

And October 24, 2011

The requirements of the Bobcat Badge are rather extensive and necessitate the new Cub Scout’s devoting time and energy to:

·       Learn the Cub Scout promise;

·       Say the Law of the Pack;

·       Tell what Webelos means;

·       Show the Cub Scout sign;

·       Show the Cub Scout handshake;

·       Say the Cub Scout motto;

·       Give the Cub Scout salute;

·       and with your adult partner review the Youth Protection portion of the Cub Scout Handbook.

Now all our Cub Scouts have earned their Bobcat Badge.  Those who were honored Monday, November 28, were:

Dakota Cox

James Hovis

On Monday, October 24, these boys also earned their Bobcat Badge; however, we failed to put their names in the Newsletter.  They were:

Colt Brady                                         Matthew Hollis

Chaz Bowman                                 Caleb Perry

Bryce Chandler                                Chandler Postell

Al Francisco

Congratulations for a job well done.

SCOUTS EARN BEAR ADVANCEMENT

November 28, 2011

Tristan Blaylock and Kevin LaConto have completed 12 requirements to earn their Bear Badge.  The requirements are divided into four categories:  God, Country, Family, and Self with numerous choices for accomplishments in each category.  They have been working, along with their parents, all through the summer and fall to reach this ultimate goal.  They can now use their learned skills to help the other Bears in their Den to reach the same goal.  Congratulations for a job well done.

MEETING

The November 28 meeting included all Scouts in a flag retirement ceremony.  This is one of the most prestigious, serious ceremonies in which we are involved.  The boys did an excellent job of handling the ceremony and showing honor and respect to the three flags that were retired.  Thanks to all the parents and family members who braved the very cold weather to show their pride in their Scouts and honor our Flag.

ROLLER SKATING PARTY/FUNDRAISER

December 12, 2011

The excitement is building for our December 12 Skating Event at Dazzles Roller Skates, located off Fairburn Road at 3844 Longview Drive in Douglasville.  The festivities will begin at 6:30 and go until 8:30.   All parents and siblings, as well as friends, family, and neighbors, are invited to attend this event.   We will be drawing for several door prizes—three MP3 players and three iPods—so make sure you include this date on your calendar.  If we have over 100 participants, we will also be able to include a portable DVD player in our drawings.  Scouts will receive their Pinewood Derby unit at  the gathering which will allow them time to work on their special car through the Christmas/New Year holidays.

SCOUT SUNDAY

February 12, 2011

Please correct your calendars as this date has been changed by agreement with our Charter Organization.

To honor our Charter Organization, New Covenant United Methodist Church, and celebrate the birthday of Scouting, we will participate as a Pack in the church service of New Covenant on February 12.  All Scouts are required to be in Class A uniform for this event.  More details will follow in the next few weeks.

PINEWOOD DERBY

February 18, 2011

The fun event of the year is scheduled for February 18 so start making plans to participate.  Mark Dean is leading the Derby Committee this year and will be able to answer any questions you may have.  Mark will be sending out communications and advising you of workshops and handy tips also.  His cell phone number is 404-310-2627.  The blocks of wood for the cars will be given out at the skating party on December 12.  Please watch for additional details in the next few weeks.

BLUE & GOLD BANQUET

March 5, 2011

One of our most honorable events of the year will be taking place on March 5.  Linda Eller has agreed to be the Chairman of this Committee and will need your help to organize the event and get the food buffet set up.  Please look for additional details on this awards banquet and crossover program in the future.  Please see Linda if you can help on set-up, clean-up, and organization of the banquet.

COMMITTEE PERSONS

AND DEN LEADERS NEEDED

Recharter and advancement is only a few weeks away and several of our seasoned Den Leaders, who also hold committee positions, will be moving into Boy Scouts and out of Cub Scouts.  The lifeblood of the Pack will be the new parents who can fill these positions and help to keep the 70+ year legacy of Pack 39 moving forward.  Planning is required each week to make the Den Meeting run smoothly.  Events must be organized for the education, enlightenment, and, of course, fun of each Cub Scout.  It takes dedicated, creative, and inspired individuals to make the Pack run smoothly.  You do not have to have some special calling or training to be a Den Leader or a Committee Member—just a positive attitude and the inspiration to leave a legacy to our greatest National resource, our children.  Various positions are open and need someone to step up and take the responsibility for the coming year.

In addition, some of our most exciting events will be coming up in February and March—the Blue & Gold Banquet, Webelos Advancement, and the Pinewood Derby and concession stand.  These various occasions require additional precise planning and participation by all parents, families, siblings, and Scouts.  These are temporary committee positions for these events only.  If you wish to participate in any of these planning positions, please see Sandy Hoskinson.

WEEKLY FLAG CEREMONY RESPONSIBILITIES

Listed below are the flag assignments for the coming meetings:

Wolves            December 5

Webelos have accepted responsibility to be Caller each week.  Karen and/or Stacy will make the Caller assignment since this is one of the requirements the Webelos must complete.

 Den Leaders will be responsible for having your Scouts ready in Class A uniform to present the flags.

PRAYER GARDEN MAINTENANCE

The Pack is responsible for weeding, picking up paper or debris, sweeping the sidewalk, clearing leaves in the fall, and generally taking care of the Prayer Garden outside the side entrance that we enter through each week.  We also keep the bird feeders full with the feed that is kept in the supply closet.

Den Leaders:  The Prayer Garden needs your attention and work.  Please remind your Cubs or Webelos to be at the Church a little early on the Monday your Den is maintaining the Garden so this does not detain the opening ceremony and please follow-up to see that this is taken care of each week.  The rotation for the Prayer Garden is as follows:

December 5                 Webelos II

This Garden honors one of our past Scouts and helps our charter organization maintain the property that they share with us each week.  Thanks for the respectful and diligent manner in which you handle your responsibility.

Thought for the Week:    Trust is the single most important factor in both personal and professional relationships.
